In 2007 I was a single mum looking and failing to find work. So, to forget my worries I spent time drawing and creating with my daughter, unaware that I was teaching myself a new skill! Eventually I was persuaded by a friend to try and sell some of my artwork in her shop. To my amazement, not only did they sell, but I was commissioned to do a drawing for a family in the USA! Since then my luck grew and I have been commissioned to complete portraits of people and their pets from all over the world.
I love what I do. I have met some wonderful people whom have trusted me to portray their likeness onto canvas and it is always an honour to be asked. The relationship between the artist and the sitter is an intimate but temporary one. During the sittings when the poses are decided, the attire chosen and the facial expressions set, the atmosphere is often jovial and excitable. I have laughed, cried and grumbled along with the client and I have shared their anticipation when the completed portraits have been revealed.
Often I have been asked to paint posthumous portraits. The subject has not been available so instead I rely on their friends and family to share their stories and allow me a privilaged insight of the person they fondly remember. They share stories that allow me a glimpse of what the deceased person was like; how they lived their lives, how they spoke, what they liked, how they held themselves... The fact that they loved the subject so much that they wish to immortalise their presence onto canvas is humbling and I feel honored that they have chosen me with whom they share their memories.
So, thank you for visiting this site! I welcome your interest because without it, I wouldn't have the opportunity to develop as an artist. You never know, maybe one day you will see your own image included in the galleries on this website! ;-) Best Wishes, Caroline.
